Why Gua Sha Is A Non-Negotiable In My Skincare Routine

Using a Gua Sha tool can have a ton of benefits for your skin.
I should know: I actually use a Gua Sha tool and have done a ton of research on and written about the benefits of using a Gua Sha.
Lately I’ve been slack at using my Gua Sha consistently. I know, a bit rich coming from the woman who tells everyone they need to use a Gua Sha tool and facial roller all the time!
So I decided to commit to actually using my Gua Sha every night before bed for two weeks straight.
Why? To remind myself why a Gua Sha tool is such an important part of my skincare routine, and to share my experience with you.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A GUA SHA TOOL?
A quick recap on the benefits of using a Gua Sha tool:
-
Assists with facial lymphatic drainage (which helps reduce puffiness and improve the skin’s appearance overall)
-
Supports blood circulation and skincare product penetration
-
Contours the face
-
Releases tension and is relaxing
WHAT WAS MY SKIN LIKE BEFORE I STARTED USING A Gua Sha CONSISTENTLY?
Prior to starting my nightly Gua Sha routine, I took some notes on what my skin and face looked like. Oh, and I took a photo to show you too!
Here’s my face before I started diligently sticking to my Gua Sha routine.
The key takeaways:
-
My skin looked dull and tired. Despite me diligently applying my skincare products, it didn’t look fresh and glowy. (Full disclosure: some of the late nights staring at a screen may have contributed to my skin looking a little lacklustre.)
-
My face and my eyes were a bit puffy. Again, I think we can blame the late nights staring at a screen… and maybe the extra glasses of rosé I’d been indulging in through the week!
-
My neck and jaw areas felt really tense. Obviously you can’t see this in the picture, but trust me, I could feel it. Also, there seems to be a pattern emerging here - I think we can blame the excess hours of sitting at a desk and staring at a computer screen for the tension.
Clearly, I could do with a consistent Gua Sha routine (and less screen time).
IS THERE A RECOMMENDED WAY TO USE A Gua Sha TOOL?
There is. You want to start at your jawline and from the middle of your face and slide the tool along your face in an upwards and outwards motion.
Don’t forget your neck and shoulder areas!

SPILL THE TEA! HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED AFTER I USED A GUA SHA CONSISTENTLY FOR TWO WEEKS
I’d like to begin by giving myself a pat on the back for using my Gua Sha every night for two weeks. So was it worth it?
I think so! Here’s me after using my Gua Sha every night for two weeks straight:
The changes I’ve noticed include:
-
My skin looks healthier. It has way more of a glow to it, and looks/feels more plump. The best part? My skin looks like this when I wake up!!
-
Puff be gone! I think my face looks less puffier. I’m still rocking some eye bags because I am yet to kick my bad habit of staring at a screen for too many hours to the curb.
-
Cheekbones are popping. Just ever so slightly. Now, I’ve always had pretty decent cheekbones - so I’m not saying using a Gua Sha will magically give you prominent cheekbones. But, it has helped enhance them
-
My jawline is snatched! It looks more defined, and is tighter, than before.
-
The tension has disappeared. I think this has been my favourite part of consistently sticking to my Gua Sha routine. You can’t see the lack of tension in my neck and jaw area but I can confirm it’s gone. You can’t imagine what a relief it is to wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready to go, instead of feeling like I slept with my neck on a weird angle for eight hours straight.
Lesson learned. Using a Gua Sha is now a non-negotiable in my nightly skincare routine. I’ve stuck to it since my two week experiment ended and I don’t think I’ll ever look back.
