Our Interview With Alpha-H: Inspiring Alpha Women
Posted by Amanda Soon onTell us about your career journey
Growing up, I’ve always been in awe of my parents’ ability to spend quality time with family, all whilst being amazing business owners, and constantly making good, lasting impact with their customers. I’ve been inspired to take the same path from a young age, so I decided to move to Melbourne at 17 to pursue Commerce at Melbourne University.
You could say that I’ve lived and breathed the beauty industry since I was a baby! My family (extended family included) have been and are still in the industry, and yes, it comes with perks like (unlimited) free facials and haircuts. Offers are valid on trips home to Malaysia.
The last 13 years have gone by in the blink of an eye - from starting my career in Corporate Advisory (Tax Legislation & Corporate Structures, anyone?!), to taking up volunteer roles in Marketing, Sales and Leadership. All in the lead up to building Zove. I felt it was the right time to make the move into beauty 3 years ago, and have never looked back :)
What are you most proud of in your career?
Building genuine relationships with people I’ve had the privilege to come across. I really love that, and wouldn’t enjoy my day-to-day life in the same way without them. There’s so much to learn from everyone, each individual is unique. One of life’s greatest gifts is to find those that you get to cheer on, and that also cheers you on.
A wise person once told me this: be kind to the people you meet and enjoy the journey; the business will mean nothing in hindsight if it's just about profits and numbers.
Biggest challenge in your career?
To be super honest, the hardest challenge is overcoming doubt & fear that I carry in my head from time to time.
The past 2 years in the pandemic were tough, but have also been a blessing. It’s forced me to slow down and truly learn how to lean in and fully embrace this challenge. It starts by taking time out to sit with myself, and ask, how did the fear get in my head?
Breaking it down logically helps me realise that the obstacles I face can be overcome, it’s generally not as difficult or scary as it seems!
What role did other supportive women play in your career progression?
My mum is my biggest role model, she’s just a phone call away and always knows what to say at just the right time. I also remember visiting my aunties every Christmas and always leaving those visits empowered. It’s the stories they tell and lives they live that inspire me.
There have been numerous women that have welcomed me into the beauty industry in Australia with open arms, many of whom have made introductions that have been pivotal to our growth. It’s beautiful to see that women are supporting and lifting each other up, and it’s only going to get better from here.
How has gender equality in the workplace changed over time?
I’m excited to see a future where all genders can access equal opportunities and outcomes. It starts with two fundamentals: education and awareness.
There have been changes, but we can do better. No effort is too small, and I’m devoted to learning more about how we can incorporate this through our small business.
